The Brownwood Fire Department along with the volunteer fire departments from Early, Lake Dam, Bangs, Brookesmith, and Winchell fought the fire for more than five hours in the high heat Saturday afternoon.  Firefighters initially had difficulty reaching the fire since it was located on the hill in thick brush and rough terrain.  The fire spread along the hill for several hours causing a large plume of smoke to be visible from many locations around Brownwood.  At one point, firefighters were concerned that the fire was threatening a storage building at a nearby shooting range.

Firefighters started a controlled back-burn that helped eliminate the advancing flame’s fuel source where it was eventually controllable.   No word on the cause of the fire at this time.

As this blaze on the edge of Brownwood was being put under control, fire crews were called to the north side of Lake Brownwood where a 3-5 acre grass fire was reported near Old Lane.  Firefighters were dispatched and quickly got it under control.

The public is reminded that Brown County is currently under a Burn Ban due to hot and dry conditions.

Photos are from Saturday’s fire near Greenleaf Cemetery.
