Shortly before 3:00pm Thursday, Brownwood Fire Department responded to a house fire in the 500 block of Melwood.  Flames engulfed the house, which seems to be a total loss.  A huge plume of smoke was visible for a large distance around the city.

Firefighters pumped water into the attic as smoked fill the street full of concerned neighbors and onlookers.  Reports indicate that no one was injured as a result of the fire.  Police blocked off the surrounding neighborhood to traffic which was very heavy.

The Brownwood Fire Department is investigating.
