We have been blessed over the years to be a part of many different projects where we could volunteer our time. Because of this, Kiera has been able to meet and be involved with lots of amazing people in the community.

Some of these amazing people are our firefighters and police officers. I’m sure you may remember one of my previous stories where we stalked the firefighters through the store just so she could say hello to them.  Our police officers have not had us stalk them through a store… yet. I’m not going to say it won’t happen in the future.

Kiera has been around different branches of law enforcement, from the sheriff’s department, state troopers and police officers. She doesn’t prefer one over the other, they are all equally important, as they should be.

Yesterday, as she and I were driving across town, we were discussing seat belts and other traffic laws.

“You will get in trouble by the police if you don’t stop at the red light,” she stated matter-of-factly.

“That’s right. It is important to follow the rules or laws to keep people safe,” I explained.

Let me just take a minute to throw this in. I never know where our conversations will lead… never, ever. I could try and guess what she might say, but I would be wrong.

Her next sentence was priceless.

“If people did not obey the rules, they would get in trouble. Because, God made the rules…”

Now, at this point of the conversation, I started shaking my head in agreement.

She continued on, “God made the rules and He told the police and the police told us.”

I paused from shaking my head for a moment as I processed that line of thought.  I envisioned God picking up a direct line to the police station. From there the police officers would all be called into one room, where God would be put on speakerphone as He gave out the new laws.

By now, you should have figured out which parent Kiera gets her imagination from.

Now, that’s not exactly how it all works, but I agreed with her. I agreed with her because our law enforcement put their lives on the line every day to protect and serve. I think my bumper sticker says it best. It reads, “Blessed are the Peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.”

One day, Kiera will learn the difference between how laws are created and how they are enforced. But for now… I am satisfied with her train of thought.

She finished our conversation with this, “Police are our heroes. They’re trying to save the world.”

With a tear in my eye, I shook my head in agreement. For being 5 years old, she is very wise.
