You know for a guy who has been doing this for a long, long time, it’s hard for me to say I never, I NEVER thought I’d be doing a column on the girls track team of Brownwood High School. Why? They won the State Championship this weekend in Austin and they did it in amazing fashion. I can tell you right now, that Brownwood has never won a girls state championship so I know I’ve never done anything like this. SO, congratulations to the Lady Lions.
I wish I could tell you all of them but I’m afraid I will leave someone out. There’s junior Icess Hall, sophomore Kaya Phillips, junior Jade Morin and junior Aniah Hines. Phillips ran the 200 and got a gold medal for that. The 4×200 relay team was Phillips, Morin, Hines and senior Kate Tindol. The 4×400 relay team was Tindol, Morin, freshman Rebekkah Delgado and senior Braycee Lee, all of which just ran great down in Austin and established new school records. Junior Hannah Deen placed fifth in the high jump which was her second trip to Austin.
I could give you times and stuff like that but I don’t want to get bogged down in all of that. They are just such special girls and the great thing about it, it’s harder to do the second time, believe it or not, than it is the first. I believe this team will have the nucleus back and could very easily win State again next year.
“It’s been a little stressful today, but I got through it because of my coaches and my team,” Phillips said after competing in her fourth event of the day.” Fourth event of the day! “The 4×2, we thought we had a good shot to win it, but you can’t ever be upset with the silver medal at state,” said Coach Chelsy Lipsey. Coach Lipsey just proved herself! I think I heard on the radio the other day that she said they had a goal of winning Region, but they won State.
Coach Lipsey, hats off to her! Tindol added an 8th place run in the 300-meter hurdles as she came in with a time that put her in 8th. Who else ran? Phillip competed in the long jump and had a best leap of 17-4. Tindol, Lee, and Sidney Windham, who earlier this season set school records in the 3200 and 1600 meters, will all three graduate this month but a solid nucleus is expected back next year.
It was very emotional! I don’t know how many Brownwood people got there, but I can tell you it was emotional for all of them. For the first time in history they hoist the 4A State Championship trophy! I am so proud of those girls I just can’t say anything else. I’m just super proud and you should be, too!
Until next time, so long everybody.
