Brownwood tennis rolls past 6A Copperas Cove for 16-3 non-district win

Avery Mair (pictured) collected a singles win and teamed up with Claire Meinecke for a doubles victory for Brownwood (9-3, 1-0), which visits district rival Lampasas Thursday.

COPPERAS COVE – The Brownwood High tennis team chalked up a 16-3 non-district victory over Class 6A Copperas Cove Friday to improve to 9-3 on the fall team season.

The boys doubles teams swept the competition, and the mixed doubles team of Trine Baugh and Ihana Figueroa (6-0, 6-3 over Jaiden Cruz and Ariah Hairston) also notched a win.

Lions tandems notching victories were No. 1 River Prado and Tyler Mitchell (7-6[0], 6-3 over Kyle Moore and Will Smith), No. 2 Eric Smith and Wesley Goodrich (6-1, 6-3 over Seth Smith and Eli Weaver) and No. 3 Caleb Dietlin and Blake Hutchins (6-1, 6-1 over Jacob Heise and Gabe Norton).

For the Lady Lions, doubles wins were claimed by No. 1 duo Emma Delgado and Ashlyn Bundick (6-2, 6-2 over Ava Petro and Milena Robles) and No. 3 pairing Claire Meinecke and Avery Mair (6-3, 6-2 over Shania Lee and Georgia Montgomery).

The Lions and Lady Lions picked up five wins in six singles matches as well.

On the girls sides, triumphs belonged to No. 1 Delgado (6-1, 6-3 over Red Holmes), No. 3 Figueroa (7-5, 6-1 over Hairston), No. 4 Anna Daniel (7-5, 6-2 over Julisa Foster), No. 5 Mair (6-3, 6-0 over Montgomery), and No. 6 Amy Decchaulene (4-6, 6-3, 10-6 over Lee).

In boys action, singles victories were earned by No. 1 Prado (6-1, 6-0 over Will Smith), No. 3 Goodrich (6-2, 6-4 over Kyle Moore), No. 4 Smith (6-3, 6-1 over Weaver), No. 5 Dietlin (6-1, 6-0 over Heise) and No. 6 Hutchins (5-7, 7-5, 12-10 over Seth Smith).

Brownwood returns to District 6-4A competition, seeking a 2-0 start, at 4 p.m. Thursday with a trip to the Lampasas.
