Burton Harvey Brackett, 88, of Texas, passed away on May 16, 2026, after a long and distinguished life marked by service to his country, devotion to his family, and dedication to his community. Family will hold a celebration of life on a later date.
Born on August 27, 1937, in Greenland, New Hampshire, Burton began a remarkable military career with the United States Air Force in 1954. Over two decades of active-duty service, he rose through the enlisted ranks from Airman First Class to Technical Sergeant, serving from 1954 until his retirement in 1974. During his years in the Air Force, he earned numerous honors and commendations, including the Air Force Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Longevity Service Awards, and multiple Air Force Good Conduct Medals.
Burton’s commitment to excellence was evident throughout his military career. He completed Strategic Air Command NCO Preparatory School at Loring Air Force Base in Maine and later served as an instructor at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama and Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas. He was recognized as an Outstanding Instructor and Outstanding Senior Instructor with the USAF School of Applied Aerospace Sciences.
On September 5, 1959, Burton married the love of his life, Lucille Emma Bourassa, in Sanford, Maine. Together they built a life grounded in loyalty, perseverance, and love.
Following his retirement from active military service, Burton continued working in telecommunications with GTE (General Telephone Electronics) as a cable splicer from 1977 to 1991. His dedication to service did not end there. In 1991, he joined the Texas State Guard, where he continued to lead and serve, eventually attaining the rank of Captain. During his time with the Texas State Guard, he received numerous recognitions, including the Texas State Guard Service Medal, Governor’s Unit Citation, Meritorious Service Ribbon, Meritorious Achievement Award, and Texas State Guard Faithful Service Medal.
Burton will be remembered for his patriotism, leadership, work ethic, and unwavering sense of duty. He touched the lives of many through his military instruction, mentorship, and steadfast commitment to those around him.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Lucille Emma Brackett, along with family, friends, fellow service members, and all who were honored to know him.
His legacy of service and dedication will endure for generations.
