
Based on regional performances, 12 of the qualifiers from the BrownwoodNews.com coverage are in prime position to claim medals at the UIL Track and Field State Championships Thursday through Saturday at the University of Texas’s Myers Stadium in Austin.
Heading into the state meet with times or heights that currently rank as either a gold, silver, or bronze medalist include:
- Richland Springs’ reigning state champion Brice Roesler – 1st in the 1A boys shot put (53-1.25) ahead of Aden Rhiver of Leakey (50-4.75) Roesler attempts to defend his title at 2 p.m. Saturday.
- Blanket’s Kannon Kensing – 1st in the 1A boys 200 meters (22.52) ahead of second Reece Rainey of Hamlin (22.65). Kensing runs at 7:55 p.m. Saturday.
- Coleman’s Victoria Guerrero – 1st in the 2A girls 1600 meters (5:11.2) ahead of Cara Sims of Elysian Fields (5:14.69). Guerrero runs at 8:15 p.m. Friday.
- Bangs 2A boys 4×200 relay of Braxton Wommack, Connor Bible, Brennan Mendieta, and Jayden Robinson – 2nd at 1:28.78 behind Tioga (1:27.45). The Dragons compete at 6:40 p.m. Friday.
- Richland Springs’ Cohen Ethridge – 2nd in the 1A boys 300-meter hurdles (39.27) behind Stryker Reed of Gordon (37.57). Ethridge runs at 7:35 p.m. Saturday.
- Richland Springs’ Brice Roesler – 2nd in the 1A boys discus (162-0) behind Nathaniel Sansom of Whitharral (162-10). Roesler competes at 11 a.m. Saturday.
- Early’s Ellie Shea – 3rd in the 3A girls discus (131-7) behind Simone Maiden of Duncanville Village Tech (134-4) and Breeley Lively of Franklin (133-9). Shea competes at 9 a.m. Thursday.
- Early’s Jamie Vassar – 3rd in the 3A girls shot put at 40-11.5 behind Simone Maiden of Duncanville Village Tech (44-0.75) and Rayya Brown of Hooks (43-2.75). Vassar competes at 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
- Zephyr’s Aaron Fagan – 3rd in the 1A boys 3200 meters (9:55.15) behind Camden Lummus of Roby (9:51.21) and Sebastian Talamantez of Comstock (9:53.69). Fagan runs at 9:15 a.m. Saturday.
- Goldthwaite’s Rylie Harris – 3rd in the 2A girls 800 meters (2:19.77) behind Cara Sims of Elysian Fields (2:18.83) and Yarida De Leon of Chilton (2:19.44). Harris runs at 5:20 p.m. Friday.
- Coleman 2A girls 4×400 relay of Kylie Strickland, Makenna Edwards, Victoria Guerrero, Savannah Hurtado – 3rd at 4:01.76 behind Panhandle (3:57.37) and Tioga (4:01.19). The Bluekatts run at 8:45 p.m. Friday.
- Richland Springs’ Cohen Ethridge – 3rd in the 1A boys long jump (22-1.5) behind Damon Byrd of Saint Jo (22-9.75) and Kalob Runnels of Fannindel (22-5.5). Ethridge competes at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Seven more state qualifiers enter this weekend’s competition with the fourth-best regional efforts, poised to make a potential push for a medal. Those local entrants are :
- Zephyr’s Aaron Fagan in the 1A boys 1600 meters (4:36.93) behind Sebastian Talamantez of Comstock (4:28.92), Camden Lummus of Roby (4:30.12) and Kaden Lees of Marathon (4:31.65). Fagan runs at 8:15 p.m. Saturday.
- Kannon Kensing in the 1A boys 100 meters at 11.08 behind Ry Reed of Gordon (10.66), Damon Byrd of Saint Jo (11.03), and Miles Colunga of Garden City (11.06). Kensing runs at 6:05 p.m. Saturday.
- Coleman’s Savannah Hurtado in the 2A girls 300-meter hurdles (45.46) behind Drew Stewart of Normangee (44.31), Abigail Dial of James Bowie (44.96) and Adalyn Falls of Ropes (44.98). Hurtado will take the track at 7:35 p.m. Friday.
- Richland Springs boys 1A 4×100 relay of Evan Deeds, Ethan Deeds, Cohen Ethridge and Layne Ward (43.64) behind Hamlin (42.99), Strawn (43.05), and Klondike (43.3). The Coyotes run again at 5 p.m. Saturday.
- Richland Springs boys 1A 4×200 relay of Evan Deeds, Ethan Deeds, Cohen Ethridge and Layne Ward (1:31.23) behind Gordon (1:29.31), Saint Jo (1:30.8), Hamlin (1:30.81). The Coyotes run again at 6:40 p.m. Saturday.
- Cross Plains’ Colter Wedeking in the 1A boys triple jump (43-2.25) behind Damon Byrd of Saint Jo (45-10.5), Kalob Runnels of Fannindel (43-11.25) and Ian Simmons of Balmorhea (43-4.25). Wedeking competes at 1 p.m. Saturday.
- Sidney’s Kallin Woodley in the 1A girls 800 meters (2:24.72) behind Nallely Flores of San Isidro (2:19.78), Danni Ruiz of Menard (2:22.48), and Gracee Henderson of McLean (2:23.86). Woodley runs at 5:20 p.m. Saturday.
Also qualifying for the state meet, and looking to surprise in a dark horse capacity are:
