The Brownwood Police Department is advising residents that a confirmed case of rabies has been identified within the Brownwood city limits.
Last week, a raccoon was located in the area of 1st Street and Schroeder Lane, euthanized, and submitted to the Texas Department of State Health Services Laboratory for testing. Test results confirmed that the raccoon was positive for rabies.
Residents in the surrounding area are encouraged to closely monitor pets and local wildlife for signs of rabies and ensure all pets are current on rabies vaccinations.
Signs of rabies in animals may include aggressive or unusually tame behavior, excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth, difficulty walking or appearing disoriented, staggering, paralysis or seizures, nocturnal animals appearing active during the daytime, or animals that seem unafraid of people or pets. Residents should avoid approaching or attempting to handle wild or stray animals, especially if they appear sick or are behaving abnormally.
If a person or pet is bitten or scratched by a potentially rabid animal, the wound should immediately be washed thoroughly with soap and water, and medical attention should be sought as soon as possible. Residents should also contact local authorities to report the incident and, if possible, avoid destroying or losing sight of the animal so it can be safely captured and tested. Pet owners whose animals may have been exposed should contact their veterinarian immediately.
Residents are encouraged to report suspicious animal activity or potential rabies exposure to the Brownwood Police Department Animal Control Division at (325) 646-2525.
The Brownwood Police Department will continue working with state health officials.
