May in eighth place, Goldthwaite ninth after first round of boys golf state tournaments

The May Tigers are in eighth place at the Class A boys golf state tournament at Crystal Falls Golf Course in Leander and the Goldthwaite Eagles are tied for ninth place at the Class 2A boys golf state tournament at Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin after 18 holes in the 36-hole events.

May posted a 367 team score Monday which trails Robert Lee (353), Brookeland (354), Whitharral (355), Wildorado (361), Knippa (361), Abbott (361), and Garden City (361).

Goldthwaite, meanwhile, carded a 339 along with Yorktown, which leaves them behind Mildred (299), Crawford (303), Lipan (309), Mason (310), Farwell (313), New Home (315), Sundown (325), and Lindsay (326).

Individually, two-time state champion Walt Thompson of Goldthwaite is three shots off the lead following a round of 70 Monday. Isaiah Igo of Sundown, Zander Zafar of Tioga, and Linden Brown of Windthorst all fired 67s, Landon Reece of Mildred carded a 68, and Cooper Nichols of Farwell, like Thompson, posted a round of 70.

Also competing for Goldthwaite are Owen Campbell with an 81, Brady Deris with a 93, Drew Bristol with a 95, and Scott Reynolds with a 109.

For May, Kobey Morris recorded a round of 83 followed by Hunter Seider with a 91, Mikey Scheriger with a 93, Justin McKenzie with a 100, and Kaden Watkins with a 106.

Also, Sidney’s Grant Torres is five shots off the lead at the Class A tournament with an opening round of 79, one shot back of third place, and Zephyr’s Slade Butler turned in a first-round 96 .

The top individuals at the Class A tournament at the halfway point are Wildorado’s Hunter Corman with a 74, three shots clear of Texline’s Bo Bradley (77), and four shots in front of Copper Popelka of Whitharral (78) and David Carr (78) of Lometa.

The final round of the boys state golf takes place Tuesday.
