SWEETWATER – The Brownwood High tennis team improved to 2-1 on the season with a resounding 16-3 road victory over Sweetwater Saturday afternoon in 102-degree heat.

The Lions dominated by winning all nine of their matches – six singles and three doubles, as the doubles tandems remained undefeated on the season.

The Lady Lions added wins in five of their six singles matches, picked up a doubles victory, and the mixed doubles duo was also victorious.

“We fought again with 102 degree temperatures and won,” said Brownwood tennis head coach Dalton Hutchins. “ I think the hotter it gets the better we play.”

Winning the boys doubles matches were No. 1 Trine Baugh and Blake Hutchins (8-5 over Isaac Lotzenheiser and Tyler Ramirez), No. 2 Wesley Goodrich and Eric Smith (8-2 over Yang and Yang) and No. 3 Aiden Oplotnik and Chance Pinkney (9-8[8] over Bryan Rangel and Kilgore).

Collecting singles victories for the Lions were No. 1 Goodrich (8-4 over Lotzenheiser), No. 2 Smith (8-2 over Ramirez), No. 3 Hutchins (9-7 over Vicente Ordona), No. 4 Baugh (8-6 over Noah Dodd), No. 5 Oplotnik (8-6 over Mason Yang), and No. 6 Andre Martinez (8-0 over James Hefner).

Lady Lions singles triumphs belonged to No. 1 Ashlyn Bundick (8-2 over Avery Scott), No. 2 Ihana Figueroa (8-1 over Leah Pittman), No. 4 Makenzie Williams (8-1 over Kaislyn Guelker), No. 5 Shari Ray (8-6 over Riley Frazier) and No. 6 Emory May (8-2 over Adellyn Powell) for her first varsity victory.

In doubles action on the girls side, No. 1 Bundick and Figueroa (8-3 over Scott and Pittman) came out on top.

The mixed doubles match also belonged to Brownwood’s Martinez and Williams (8-3 over Ordona and Anna Rossen).

The next action for the Lions and Lady Lions is their home opener Saturday at 9 a.m. against Graham.
