GATESVILLE – The District 6-4A front-running Brownwood Lions remained undefeated in league action, again pulling away from the Gatesville Hornets in the second half for an 86-65 road victory.

“Every road game is going to be tough in this district and our guys came out shooting the ball really well, and when you do that you give yourself a great chance to win,” said Lions first-year head coach Will Parker

The Lions (21-7, 5-0), who drained 14 three-pointers, led Gatesville (12-18, 1-4) by a 51-43 count midway through three third period, but knocked down four consecutive treys – two by Bryson Monroe and one each from Jakob Hataway and Tristan Salinas – as part of a 12-2 run to boost the advantage to 63-45.

“(Three-pointers) were a big part of us pulling away there,” said Parker, whose team converted eight during a 33-point third quarter. “They’ve got the green light and they took a lot better shots tonight. They weren’t just coming over here looking to shoot, they took what the defense gave us. I was really proud of the shot selection.”

Brownwood, which led 22-20 at halftime and 44-36 at halftime, carried a 77-51 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Hataway led the Lions with 27 points behind seven three-pointers, Monroe chipped in 20, Salinas finished with 14, Luke Moss tallied 11, Christian Kinzler contributed nine points and Ike Hall added five.

“Hats off to Jakob for hitting a bunch of threes and Tristan came off the bench and hit a bunch of threes,” Parker said. “That extends the defense out and then we’re able to go inside. Sometimes you like to go inside-outside, but we were going outside-inside. Whatever works.”

The Lions are off until Tuesday when they welcome Stephenville (6-20, 0-5), which is still seeking its first league victory.
