ABILENE – The Howard Payne Lady Jackets rebounded from a 7-0 loss to St. Thomas earlier Friday with a 9-0 thrashing of Centenary Friday in non-conference softball action at Hardin-Simmons University’s Ellis Field.

In the win over Centenary, the Lady Jackets (9-4) struck for seven runs in the fourth inning, ending a 10-inning scoreless drought for the day. Howard Payne also tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Zaleigh Perez, Alyssa Corpus, Brianna Lopez and Kiley Persons accounted for two hits apiece, while Kayla Hill, Tori Muro, Aurora Luera, Alexis Sullivan and Deandra Longoria contributed one each. Hill drove in two runs with a homer, while Corpus and Luera also finished with two RBIs. Persons drove in a run as well.

In the circle, Tia Campos hurled a five-hit shutout with five strikeouts and two walks.

Against St. Thomas, Howard Payne was limited to five hits while being shut out for the second time in 2021.

The Lady Jackets (9-4) are back in action next Friday and Saturday at Belhaven as they resume American Southwest Conference action with a three-game series.
