Offensive woes have plagued the Brownwood Lady Lions throughout the season, and that was again the case in Tuesday night’s 47-20 loss to the No. 5 Stephenville Honeybees in District 6-4A action at Warren Gym.

The Lady Lions (8-11, 1-3) mustered just three points in the first quarter and one in the second and trailed Stephenville (17-1, 4-0) by a 19-4 count at halftime.

“We couldn’t buy a basket in the first half,” said Lady Lions’ 12th-year head coach Heather Hohertz. “We didn’t hit a three-pointer in the game, we were 6 for 22 on two-pointers and 8 for 16 at the free throw line. When we’re not making shots we don’t really have a lot of energy. That’s how we played at the first of the year. We tried to chip away, we just couldn’t finish a shot.”

The Lady Lions limited Stephenville to just four points in the second period, but the Honeybees responded with 14 points in the third period. Brownwood went 15:31 between its first and second field goals, as a bucket by Brooke Price trimmed Stephenville’s lead to 25-6 at the 4:35 mark of the third quarter.

“We can’t start a game like that, we can’t get ourselves in that big of a hole,” Hohertz said. “We don’t have the offensive firepower to come back when we’re down by 15 or 20 points at the half and expect to put ourselves in a position to win.”

Brownwood trailed 33-11 at the end of the third period as Tessa Goodwin – who finished with a team-high nine points, all in the second half – sank two free throws with seven seconds left in the quarter to boost the Lady Lions into double figures.

The Lady Lions crept within 17 points, 37-20, with 3:10 left to go on a bucket by Jaylen Savage, but Stephenville reeled off the final 10 points of the contest.

Following Goodwin’s nine points, Savage added six, Price contributed four, Lindsey Larose chipped in two and Alexa Arreola sank a free throw.

Alee McClendon led Stephenville with 13 points and Landri Withers tallied a dozen.

The Lady Lions begin the second half of District 6-4A action at 6 p.m. Friday when they host No. 7 Glen Rose (20-2, 3-1). Brownwood lost the first meeting at Glen Rose, 36-32.
