The Brownwood High tennis team halved its two home matches Saturday against Wall and Snyder, as the Lions and Lady Lions will carry a 2-2 overall record in their District 6-4A opener against Glen Rose on Sept. 10.

The Lions and Lady Lions ended the day with 10-9 victory over Snyder, snapping a two-match skid.

“Managing the heat and some injuries in the second match of the day, we pulled off a close one with Snyder,” said Brownwood High tennis head coach Crystal Blazek. “We had several kids who pulled off key victories – Julian Lares and Victor Hernandez in boys singles and Labritaney Pollard and Tatum Dehart in girls singles. We came back after being down 4-3 in doubles so it was good tennis and now we rest before district.”

Notching singles wins for the Lady Lions were No. 2 Aaliyah Uvalle (6-2, 6-1 over Mary Kerr), No. 3 Lillian Jonescue (6-0, 6-1 over Brandy Jones), No. 4 Pollard (6-2, 6-2 over Avery Schiftner), and No. 6 Dehart (6-4, 6-3 over Makenah Short).

Collecting singles victories for the Lions were No. 2 Lares (6-0, 4-6, 10-3 over Shad Hodge), No. 3 Hernandez (3-6, 6-4, 10-7 over Xavier Sigarrillo), and No. 5 Dillon Gatlin (6-2, 6-1 over Neftali Jaimes).

Picking up doubles wins were No. 2 Hernandez and Nathan Ramos (6-3, 4-6, 10-5 over Blaine House and Jaimes) and No. 3 Gatlin and River Prado (6-4, 2-6, 12-10 over Sigarrillo and Robert Turner) on the boys side, along with the mixed doubles tandem of Victoria Ramos and Peter Le (6-4, 6-4 over Kerr and Jaden West).

Brownwood began Saturday’s action with a 16-3 loss to Class 3A Wall.

The victories came from the No. 1 girls doubles team of Uvalle and Jonescue (3-6, 7-5, 10-2 over Carsyn Watts and Avery Jameson), Uvalle at the No. 1 girls singles spot (6-3, 6-4 over Watts), and Ramos in the No. 3 girls singles position (6-1, 6-3 over Kristen Schwartz).

“We played a tough Wall team that came in second in their district to Mason last year,” Blazek said. “I thought we played well even though the score didn’t reflect it.”
