CeasarChavezThe 2nd Annual Cesar Chavez Celebration is set to take place at the It’s A Challenge Church located in the Heartland Mall on March 28th, 2-5pm.  Organizers state that the event is completely free of charge and features lots of family fun and education.

The event, hosted by Revitalizing Our Community (ROC), will have a variety of activities including short documentaries about Cesar Chavez along with give-a-ways and games to enjoy.

ROC Vice President, Shannon Vargas, stated that she is originally from Colorado where Chavez celebrations are more common and that she is excited to bring that knowledge and celebration to the Brownwood area.  Chavez was very instrumental in raising awareness of civil rights for Latinos.

“I was born and raised in Colorado, and Cesar Chavez is very celebrated there,” explained Vargas.  “Now that I have moved to Brownwood, I noticed not many know who he was, so I wanted to bring that knowledge of him and share that there are heroes for everyone, in all shapes, sizes and colors.”

Vargas stated that there will be a nice lineup of events including short documentaries about Chavez, followed by a birthday celebration in Chavez’s honor.  There will be a band of local musicians from area churches.  KF Karate will be doing demonstrations and Becca Cadena, instructor at TK Fitness, will be presenting a Zumba demonstration.  Kids’ activities will include fishing, coloring and reading booths and a cupcake walk.

Various tables will be present with representatives from the Brownwood Art Association, KF Karate, Brown County AgriLife Extension Office – Bilingual Service, Mary Kay, It’s a Challenge Church, Organo Gold Coffee, Revitalizing Our Community (ROC), Ron Jackson Community Relations, and the HPU Unity Group.

So mark your calendar and plan to attend this special event honoring Cesar Chavez on Saturday, March 28th.
