Off Mic With Ben Cox: Is It Really DIY When You Don’t Actually Do Anything?

bencox2I am a fan of those DIY shows on TV, the “Hey let’s take a crummy old house and with a little work and love make it a beautiful home we can love for ever” kinda shows.

I, like many of my male brethren, think that “I have many tools, some of which resemble those on the tube”. So why can’t I make things like that?

Cause I’m not a master carpenter nor a tradesman, that’s why!! (dangit)

I also end up watching YouTube videos on how to make things. I was actually watching a video about how to make a piece of junk guitar into a much better one when my reminder to write my column went off this morning!

Yeah, I’d say I’ve got it bad.

I tell myself that whenever I buy a house that I’ll have a workshop and then start making things that are beyond awesome and all my buddies will revel in my handywork.

When in fact it’ll be more like I have a shed that I tinker and putter around in and my friends will all come over and drink beer and look around asking what I’m working on now while they give advice on how to repair the mangled hulk of whatever project remains on the workbench.

Yeah, that sounds more like what it’ll be.

But I can dream right? Darn straight I can.

I can have in my mind the country kitchen that I designed on a scrap piece of plywood from the previous weekends bathroom remodel that went off without a hitch, all the while planning on the dream man cave I have in store for the next time I win the lottery….

Cause let’s face it, I’m gonna have to do that to be able to have all this time off for these projects!

Ben Cox is the morning show host of “Ben Cox in the Morning” on KQBZ, 96.9 FM in Brownwood Texas. He is the new in-stadium voice of the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets football team, & Ben is also an event DJ for weddings, parties and the like, and can be contacted through the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce.

The thoughts and comments reflected in this column are those of the writer alone, and do not necessarily reflect those of Wendlee Broadcasting, or its affiliates.
