Howard Payne University’s School of Music and Fine Arts will present the musical Into the Woods this weekend as part of their Homecoming activities.

The show will be presented Thursday, October 3; Friday, October 4; and Saturday, October 5 at 7:30 PM and Sunday, October 6 at 2:30 PM in HPU’s Mims Auditorium.

Into the Woods is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine.

The musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairytales and follows them to explore the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. The main characters are taken from “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Jack and the Beanstalk,” “Rapunzel,” and “Cinderella.” The musical is tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family, and their interaction with a witch and her curse on them.

Artistic Director Celeste Church promises a fun time during the production as the musical explores these classic fairytales.

“This will be the 5th homecoming musical that I have directed for Howard Payne, and it is one of my favorites,” Church said. “The show will be great fun for the family, particularly the first act which reflects several fairytales that audiences will remember from childhood.”

The two-act musical will run about 3 hours long and has a talented cast and crew ready to perform and entertain.

“We have a strong cast and beautiful music from the stage, supported by a student orchestra directed by Dr. Gregory Church,” Church said.  “The production will take place in Mims Auditorium and Nicholas Ewen is doing a terrific job of transforming the space into an enchanted forest.”

Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students/children.  Call the School of Music and Fine Arts at 325-649-8500 for reserve tickets.  Tickets will also be available at the door.
