Stella Lee (Wheat) Walker

WalkerStellaFuneral Services for Stella Walker, age 99 of Brownwood, Texas formerly of Bangs will be held 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at the Heartland Funeral Home.  Interment will be in Eastlawn Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. She passed away Saturday, January 14, 2012 in Brownwood. 

Stella Lee (Wheat) Walker was born October 8, 1912 in Blanket, TX the daughter of the late Cy and Rose (Hulcey) Wheat. Stella married Leroy Walker in Brownwood, TX at the courthouse on April 13, 1937 at 2:00PM and they had been married for more than 70 years when he preceded her.

As the wife of a pastor, she had a special servant heart that complemented his ministry. They pastored in several Assembly of God Churches. They founded the First Assembly of God Church in Stratford, TX.

After 12 years of pioneering, work in Stratford, they moved to Floydada, TX and pastored the First Assembly of God there. Eventually they moved to the farm in Bangs, TX. During these years Stella watched children in their home and did some work in a nursing home. They worked side by side on the farm and she would can and freeze foods they had grown. After Leroy retired in 1980 they still would do some interim pastorships for many churches in Brown County.

On January 14, 2012 she went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and her husband Leroy. She is survived by sister Helen Kelsey residing in Brownwood TX; brother Oscar Wheat living in Abilene TX; her two sons Jack Walker and his wife Davie, residing in Bangs TX; Dennis Walker and his wife Jeanellle, residing in Richardson TX; 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren, she also had 9 Exchange great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by 6 brothers and sisters and a great great granddaughter. She was loved and respected by family friends and all those who met her. She will be missed!

In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Coggin Avenue Baptist Church Building Fund.
