The Gordon Wood Hall of Champions Museum is looking forward to expansion after receiving approval from the City of Brownwood to amend the lease agreement signed in 2006 for space on the second floor of the Harvey House located at 600 E. Depot.

The museum honors Coach Gordon Wood for his championship service and the players who distinguished themselves both on and off the field.

With the approval received at Tuesday morning’s city council meeting to amend the lease for the Gordon Wood Hall of Champions, an expansion into the space previously used as the conference room of the Brownwood Economic Development Corporation will allow more room for visitors and display possibilities.

The lease space will now include rooms 206, 207, and 208 for use by the Gordon Wood Hall of Champions, Inc.

“I think in my opinion, it makes perfect sense, they can expand their displays and make use of that particular area,” stated City Manager Bobby Rountree.

The city will keep the office space that BEDC previously used for occasional city use.  This office space was described by Mayor Stephen Haynes to be the same size as the previously used conference room, allowing a nice space to use should a conference room be needed in the future.  The current size of the museum, according to Haynes is “a little tight” and that the expansion will “allow them (the Gordon Wood Hall of Champions) to spread out a little bit and be a little more visible.”

The Gordon Wood Hall of Champions Museum is located on the second floor of the Harvey House Building of the historic Brownwood Depot, 600 E. Depot Street, Brownwood, Texas. Museum Tour hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission to the Museum is free, but donations are greatly appreciated.

To make arrangements for visits to the Museum, please contact the Brownwood Chamber of Commerce at (325) 646-9535

In other matters on the city council agenda Tuesday:

*A bid of $1,101 from Knox County for the purchase of the walk-in freezer and refrigerator at the old Camp Bowie Senior Citizen Center was approved.

*Council passed an ordinance on first reading to approve a negotiated resolution between the Atmos Cities Steering Committee regarding the company’s fourth Rate Review Mechanism filing in all cities exercising original jurisdiction.  This committee includes 155 cities that were able to negotiate the rate increase to minimize cost to residential and commercial customers of Atmos.  The bill impact will be an increase of $0.31 for the average residential customer per month and an increase of $0.88 per month for the average commercial customer.
