Brownwood ISD Looking at Slightly Lower Property Tax Rate – School Board Report

bisdThe Brownwood Independent School District is proposing a slight decrease in the school property tax rate for 2010.

Monday night, the Brownwood ISD school board approved the date of August 20th to publish the proposed tax rate for public notice.  Their proposed rate will be $1.3147 per $100 valuation for property taxes.  Last year’s rate was $1.3189 per $100 valuation.  The board approved the new rate to be published on that date.

The school board will have a budget workshop on Monday, August 16th to go over the proposed budget for the 2010-2011 school year.   The school board also designated August 30th as the date they will adopt the new budget and tax rate as well as approve any budget amendments for the previous year’s budget.  If this proposed tax rate is approved, property owners will see a slight savings on their property taxes if their values remain the same.

Other agenda items at Monday’s school board meeting included:

*The board approved the 2010-2011 professional development appraisal calendars.  This designates when principals can begin orientations and observations of teachers.

*The board approved awarding the district’s fuel contract with PF&E Oil Company.  PF&E was the only bid received by the district.

*The board approved this year’s approved preferred vendor list.  These are vendors that the district will seek purchases from first, but does not commit the district from exclusively purchasing from them.

*The board approved the 2010-2011 student code of conduct.  No changes were made from last year’s code of conduct.

*The board approved November 2nd as the election day for the board of trustee election for places 1, 3, 6, and 7.

*The board discussed the possible purchase of new baseball/softball scoreboards.

*The board discussed proposed changes to the EIA (local) and FM (local) policies.

*The board also received a financial report, construction report, preliminary AYP report, and accountability rating report.

*The board also received a report regarding cuts to the school district by the federal government.  The district will receive $366,991 less in federal money as compared to last year.  Officials said that these sorts of cuts are being felt statewide.

*The board was briefed on upcoming programs that the district in implementing to help students perform better on the ACT/SAT tests.
