The Brownwood Lions trailed District 6-4A front-runner and 20th-ranked Brock by just a bucket after one quarter, but were unable to keep pace as the visiting Eagles completed a league sweep, 85-61, Tuesday night at Warren Gym.
“Brock did not graduate one senior last year and I’ve been told this is probably the best freshman class they’ve had come through,” said Lions head coach Will Parker. “They have a lot of talent, they have some great pieces and I’m excited to see the kind of run they can make in a couple of weeks. I have nothing but respect for them.”
The Lions (13-18, 0-8) remained winless in district competition and suffered their 12th setback in a row, with only two games remaining at Mineral Wells Friday and at home against Glen Rose Tuesday.
Despite scoring the first 12 points of the game, Brock (24-8, 8-0) only led the Lions by a 20-18 count after one quarter. At halftime, however, Brownwood faced a 48-26 deficit that grew only slightly to 66-42 after three periods and the final margin remained at 24 points.
“We’ve talked all year about being consistent, showing up and being ready to play no matter what happens,” Parker said. “When they do that they’re really fun to watch and coach. It’s fun to see those guys when they do that and the joy they have in playing the game.”
Casey Friebel poured in a game-high 31 points for Brownwood trailed by 11 from Durham Brown, seven from Ross Strasner, four each from Bennett Windham and Elias Perez and two points apiece from Weston Wolf and Brent Jammers.
Brownwood is back in action at Mineral Wells (5-24, 1-6) at 7 p.m. Friday.
