Two outings, two victories of 47 points by the Class 4A No. 25 Brownwood Lady Lions basketball team.
In Friday afternoon’s home opener at Warren Gym, the Lady Lions followed Tuesday’s season-opening 58-11 triumph at Class 5A Abilene High with a 63-16 victory over the Class 3A Merkel Lady Badgers.
“I thought we had balanced scoring, but I was little disappointed in our defensive effort and staying active,” said Lady Lions head coach Heather Hohertz, “But I was pleased overall considering the unusual schedule today and playing before the JV.”
The Lady Lions (2-0) jumped out to a 21-3 lead after one quarter – hitting 4 of 5 three-pointers during the frame, while creating 10 Merkel turnovers and not allowing a field goal.
By the end of the contest, Brownwood had forced Merkel (0-3) into 31 turnovers. The Lady Badgers did not record their first bucket until the 6:06 mark of the second period – a stretch of almost 10 minutes – and did not reach double figures in points until 22 seconds remained in the third quarter.
Offensively, three Lady Lions finished in double figures with Trinity Roberts scoring a game-high 14 points followed by Jentry Coalson with 12 off the bench and 10 points from Nylah Hall. Hannah Deen and Icess Hall each contributed eight points while Demayha Hooker scored four points, Jade Morin tacked on three, and Abby Brasher and Cambree Jefferson added two points apiece.
Brownwood – which led 35-7 at halftime and 45-11 after three frames – drained seven three-pointers overall and sank 10 of 14 free throws as well, while committing 12 turnovers.
The Lady Lions avoided a scare just 30 seconds into the contest when Morin went down after turning her ankle. Coalson came on and scored seven points in the first period alone, while Moran was able to return to the contest before the first half ended.
“Jentry really did a nice job stepping up for us when Jade had to come out for a while,” Hohertz said.
The Lady Lions are back in action at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday as Lampasas visits in the first half of a doubleheader, as the Lions play their home opener against Dublin at 7:15 p.m.
