“We came out really tight today,” said Lady Lions first-year head coach Kristen Grimes. “I don’t want to say we were nervous but everything was just tight. We were jabbing at balls, we weren’t moving the way we should move or normally move. Brock is a fast team and something we’ve been trying to work on is being faster on our side, but once they get the ball and are in system it’s so much faster than what we’re used to. We did OK toward the end at picking up their hitters, but the first two sets their hitters were all over the place and we weren’t staying with them.”
The Lady Lions (14-13, 0-2) received three kills each from Aniah Hines and Hannah Deen; two apiece from Demayha Hooker and Maddi Scott; and one from Icess Hall.
Hall distributed all 11 Brownwood assists while Scott served three aces and Hines chipped in one.
Defensively, Scott paced the Lady Lions with 10 digs trailed by eight from Hall; seven from Sara Stubblefield; four from Grace Sparks; three each from Jentry Coalson and Kaydence Chandler; two each from Deen and Lanie Johnson; and one by Hooker.
At the net, Hines finished with a pair of blocks while Hall, Hooker and Bellah Stokes each recorded one.
The Lady Lions are back in action at 6 p.m. Tuesday as they venture to Glen Rose, and also visit Mineral Wells at 4 p.m. Friday.
“I want to see us get in a rhythm a lot sooner,” Grimes said of her goals for the Lady Lions after two league matches. “It took two sets for us to get some fight and really get anything going. Our passing really struggled the first two sets and we didn’t get in system until the third. I really want to see us get in a groove earlier and play more relaxed and attack from the start.”
