Facing the Gatesville Lady Hornets for the second time this season, the Brownwood Lady Lions were unable to duplicate the result from their Feb. 12 meeting at the Killeen tournament, instead falling by a 8-2 count Friday night.
The Lady Lions (11-8), who blanked Gatesville (14-5) by a score of 8-0 the first time around, saw their two-game win streak come to a close as the Lady Hornets struck for two runs in the first inning, one in the second, three in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
Brownwood mustered single runs in the second and sixth innings, and collected just three hits – singles by Carlee Burks, Madison Esquivel and Audrey Keas – off Gatesville pitcher Olivia Parsons, who struck out four and walked three.
In the circle for the Lady Lions, Kaydence Allen worked six innings and yielded six runs on 13 hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Brenda Allen tossed an inning of relief and surrendered a pair runs on two hits with one strikeout.
The Lady Lions’ run in the second inning was the result of Esquivel reaching on a base hit with one out, Amarrea Thomas being hit by a pitch, and Keas following with an RBI single to left field that trimmed the deficit to 3-1.
Brownwood closed to within 6-2 in the sixth as Adyn Lucas advanced to third base on one of two Gatesville’s two errors to start the frame, then scored on an errant pickoff attempt at third.
For Gatesville, Parsons also recorded three hits and three RBIs, Brilee Ford chipped in three hits, and Amelia Langenstrass contributed two hits with one RBI.
The next action for the Lady Lions comes at 7 p.m. Friday when they host San Angelo Lake View (4-8-1).
