The Brownwood Lady Lions left 10 base runners stranded, and were unable to push across the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning despite loading the bases with one out in a 2-1 loss to District 6-4A rival Glen Rose Thursday night.
In a rematch of a 13-8 victory for Glen Rose (16-10-1, 4-2) in the district opener for both teams, the Lady Lions (14-12, 2-4) trailed by a run heading into their final at-bat.
In the bottom of the seventh, Kaydence Allen was plunked by a pitch for the second time in the game with one out, Adyn Lucas then doubled to right-center field, and courtesy-runner Kaylee Johnson advanced to third base. An intentional walk was then issued to Carlee Burks to fill the sacks with one down.
Brenda Allen then hit a sharp grounder to Glen Rose shortstop Brookelynne Yant, who fired to home plate where Johnson was retired on a force out. On the same play, Lucas attempted to score from third after drifting off the bag, and was tagged out by catcher Kitty Bell at the plate to end the contest.
Thursday’s setback followed extra-inning decisions of 12-11 against Stephenville and 8-7 against Brock where Brownwood came up short in each – all at home.
The Lady Lions grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the second inning as Burks reached on a lead-off double to deep left field, then scored on a one-out RBI single past third base by Maitlyn Esquivel.
Glen Rose forged ahead with two outs in the top of the fifth as Addison Treppa extended the inning by reaching on infield single to first base when no one covered the bag. Marki Sandlin then drew a walk, and Bell followed with a two-RBI double into shallow left field to produce both Lady Tiger runs.
Brownwood finished the game with six hits – two each by Lucas and Esquivel, and one apiece from Burks and Audrey Keas.
In the circle, Kaydence Allen pitched all seven innings and yielded two earned runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts, four walks, and eight base runners stranded.
The Lady Lions will next travel to Mineral Wells (18-8, 2-4) at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
