LUBBOCK – The Brownwood Lady Lions still have 16 opportunities to advance to the UIL Class 4A Track and Field State Championships, and need to make up 16 points in their attempt to repeat as Region I-4A track and field champions following Friday’s first day of action at Lowery Field.
The 3200 meters and running preliminaries were the only events held Friday due to the threat of rain, which didn’t materialize. Action resumes Saturday with field events at 8:30 a.m., and the running finals will take place starting at 4 p.m., as 16 of the 17 total events that comprise a UIL sanctioned meet will be decided on the final day.
Collecting points in the 3200 meters Friday were Canyon with 16, Randall with eight, Andrews with four, Stephenville with two, and Fabens with one point, which represents the team totals heading into Saturday.
In the running preliminaries, the top eight moved on to Saturday’s finals, where the final two are guaranteed spots in the state field. The top third-place finisher from all four regions across the state will clinch a berth as well as the “wild card.” The same goes for the field events, with the top two securing a guaranteed trip to Austin and the third-place finisher potentially in the mix as well.
Moving on to the finals from Brownwood based on Friday’s efforts were the 4×100 relay of Eboni Baker, Kaya Phillips, Jade Morin and Aniah Hines with a first-place time of 48:08; the 4×200 relay of Jade Morin, Eboni Baker, Aniah Hines, and Kaya Phillips with a second-place time of 1:42.53; Kaya Phillips in the 200 meters with a second-place time of 24.34; the 4×400 relay of Grace Sparks, Rebekkah Delgadp, Jentry Coalson, and Jade Morin with a third-place time of 3:57.51; Grace Sparks in the 100-minute hurdles with a fifth-place time of 15.42, and in the 300-meter hurdles with a sixth-place time of 45.9; and Hannah Deen in the 300-meter hurdles with a seventh-place time of 47.35.
Saturday’s schedule for the Lady Lions features Nylah Hall and Hannah Deen in triple jump at 8:30 a.m.; Hannah Deen in the high jump at 10 a.m.; Trinity Roberts in the discus at 10 a.m.; Grace Sparks in the pole vault at 10:30 a.m.; Kaya Phillips and Hannah Deen in the long jump at 11:30 a.m.; and Kaydence Allen in the shot put at 1 p.m.
The 4 p.m. running finals will feature the Lady Lions 4×100 relay; Rebekkah Delgado in the 800 meters; Grace Sparks in the 100-meter hurdles; the 4×200 relay; Grace Sparks and Hannah Deen in the 300-meter hurdles; Kaya Phillips in the 200 meters; and the 4×400 relay.
Icess Hall, who has been out with a hamstring injury since the preliminaries of the District 6-4A meet, is anticipated to return to the track Saturday for the 4×100 and 4×200 finals.
Also Saturday, Brownwood Lion Blayne Stegemoller will compete in the discus as a late addition after finishing fifth at the 5-4A/6-4A area meet. One of the regional qualifiers was not able to attend the meet, allowing Stegemoller the opportunity.
The 4A boys discus will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
