Earlier this month, the Brownwood Lady Lions halted a 30-match district losing streak dating back four years with a four-set victory at Mineral Wells. On Tuesday night in the home finale, the Lady Lions picked up their first league win at Warren Gym since Oct. 1, 2021 with a 25-14, 25-21, 25-16 triumph over the visiting Lady Rams, completing a District 6-4A volleyball sweep.
“I can’t speak to the last three years, but I’ve heard what they’ve talked about, so for the seniors to get a win on their home court in their last match is really special,” said Lady Lions first-year head coach Kristen Grimes. “I don’t think our win-loss record shows how much they’ve improved this season, but they’ve truly grown as leaders, as athletes and as individuals. They’ve earned this.”
Prior to the game, Brownwood’s seven seniors – Lanie Johnson, Icess Hall, Hannah Deen, Sara Stubblefield, Addy Huerta, Maddi Scott and Aniah Hines – were recognized for their dedication and contributions to the program.
Against Mineral Wells, Hines paced the attack with a dozen kills along with eight from Deen, five from Demayha Hooker, two from Kaydence Chandler, and one each from Huerta and Camryn Gipson.
Hall distributed 20 assists while Jentry Coalson contributed nine.
Behind the service line, Deen tallied three aces while Hall, Coalson, Hines and Chandler each added one.
Defensively, Johnson recorded a team-best nine digs followed by Deen with eight, Huerta with six, Scott with five, Coalson, Hines and Chandler with four apiece, Hall and Gipson with two each, and Stubblefield and Ashantia Green with one apiece.
At the net, Hooker notched three blocks while Coalson, Gipson and Green were each credited with one.
“We got some people in that haven’t seen the court a lot this whole season and they came out and executed and did what they needed to do,” Grimes said. “We talked about making sure you’re doing your job and everybody did exactly that. They did their job, they made adjustments. Mineral Wells did something different from when we played them this last time, so we made adjustments throughout the match from what we were seeing from them, and we stayed consistent the whole match. We didn’t have any ups and downs like we have in the past.”
The Lady Lions (16-18, 2-7) will conclude their 2025 volleyball season at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Stephenville.
“I want to see fight,” Grimes said. “We played really well against Stephenville last time. We talked about finishing on a high note, so to able to go over to their gym and get a win would be really cool and special for the seniors, as well as everybody else.”
