Coming off a 3-1 performance at the Battle on the Bayou over the weekend, the Brownwood Lady Lions softball team was unable to keep pace with Class 6A San Angelo Central, dropping a 10-6 home decision Tuesday night.
Brownwood (5-5) led 4-3 after one inning, but Central (8-5) tied the score in the second inning, pulled ahead 5-4 in the third, and opened a 7-4 edge in the fourth inning. The Lady Lions closed the gap to 7-6 in the bottom of the fourth, but Central tacked on three insurance runs.
The seven-hit attack for the Lady Lions included two from Kaydence Allen, who homered and drove in a pair, along with two from Peyton Pena. Carlee Burks finished with a hit and two RBIs, Hanah Campos contributed one hit and drove in one, and Jakayla Peek also chipped in one hit.
In the circle, Allen and Tynlea Wilson yielded a combined six earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and four walks. The Brownwood defense also committed three errors.
Trailing 3-0 heading to the bottom of the first inning, Romero reached on an error – the first of three against Central – and later scored on an errant pickoff throw at third base. Chloe Walls, who walked, came home on a two-out RBI single to left field by Campos, which trimmed the deficit to 3-2. Allen then launched the first pitch she saw over the right field fence to push Brownwood in front, 4-3.
Down 7-4 in the fourth, Pena singled to right field with one out, ahead of a double by Romero. With runners on second and third, Burks delivered a two-RBI single up the middle to reduce the Central lead to 7-6, but Brownwood got no closer.
The Lady Lions return to the field Thursday to take part in the three-day Llano tournament as they will face host Llano at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Ballinger at 4:10 p.m. Thursday, Marble Falls at 12:50 p.m. Friday, Plainview at 4:10 p.m. Friday, and Wall at 4:50 p.m. Saturday.
