In a match that saw 10 of the 19 contests reach tiebreakers, including five that were 10-point tiebreakers in the third set, the Brownwood High tennis team camp up short, 11-8, to Class 6A Copperas Cove, in five-plus hour home match Saturday.
“I’m really proud of the way we competed against a 6A program,” said Brownwood High tennis head coach Dalton Hutchins. “I think we’ll start converting some of these close matches as the season progresses.”
Collecting victories for Brownwood were the mixed doubles team of Ashlyn Bundick and Blake Hutchins (6-0, 6-0 over Georgia Montgomery and Seth Smith); girls doubles teams Gigi Rodriguez and Jami Patterson (2-6, 7-6, 10-7 over Ava Kennedy and Esrella Gonzalez), and Kirra Neff and Coulter Day (6-2, 6-3 over Isis Brown and Yeritza Ramos); boys tandem Eric Smith and Trine Baugh (7-5, 6-4 over Hunter Martin and Jaden Thomas); Hutchins (7-6 [4], 6-2 over Martin) and Baugh (6-7 [4], 6-4, 10-5 over Thomas) in boys singles; and Anna Daniel (7-6 [2], 6-1 over Aubree Dickinson) and Patterson (6-3, 7-6 [0]) in girls singles.
Brownwood (1-3) tennis is back in action at 4 p.m. Thursday as the Lions and Lady Lions visit San Angelo Lake View.
