
The Brownwood High tennis team opened the home portion of its 2025 fall semester schedule Saturday with an 18-1 victory over Mineral Wells and a 10-9 loss to Class 5A Keller Fossil Ridge.
In the win over Mineral Wells, the Lions swept all nine of their matches.
Doubles victories on the boys side were earned by No. 1 team Eric Smith and Trine Baugh (8-2 over Wagoner and Smith), No. 2 duo Aiden Oplotnik and Cooper Morgan (by default) and No. 3 tandem Ian Cervantes and Eli Hutson (by default).
In singles action, wins were claimed by No. 1 Blake Hutchins (8-6 over Perricone), No. 2 Smith (8-1 over Wagoner), No. 3 Baugh (8-0 over Smith), No. 4 Oplotnik (by default), No. 5 Morgan (by default) and No. 6 Cervantes (by default).
The Lady Lions swept all three of their doubles matches with victories by No. 1 Emory May and Anna Daniel (8-3 over Corogan and Bell), No. 2 Gigi Rodriguez and Jami Patterson (8-0 over Hernandez and Villegas), and No. 3 Kirra Neff and Aerin Gardner (by default).
The singles victories for the girls were earned by No. 2 Daniel (9-8 [3] over Corogan), No. 3 Neff (8-6 over Bell), No. 4 Patterson (8-3 over Villegas), No. 5 Rodriguez (8-2 over Hernandez) and No. 6 Willow Camp (8-3 Dearman).
In mixed doubles competition, Hutchins and Ashlyn Bundick (8-3 over Perricone and Johnson) also came out on top.
“Mineral Wells is a spring district opponent, so we are very pleased with that result,” said Brownwood tennis head coach Dalton Hutchins.
Against Fossil Ridge, the Lions and Lady Lions combined to split six doubles matches.
For the boys, No. 2 Smith and Oplotnik (8-4 over Evan Dietz and Steven Le) and No. 3 Morgan and Cervantes (8-3 over Nagasai Kannaderi and Soni Bhujel) were victorious.
The girls No. 3 doubles team of Rodriguez and Emory May (8-4 over Kenah Grasmick and Angelina Tran) also landed in the win column.
The Lions chalked up five singles triumphs from No. 2 Smith (8-3 over Devin Mouninong), No. 3 Baugh (8-4 over Dietz), No. 4 Oplotnik (8-0 over Le), No. 5 Morgan (8-2 over Callan Partain) and No. 6 Cervantes (8-3 over Kannedari).
The lone singles win for the Lady Lions came from No. 1 Bundick (8-2 over Ojaswi Pathek).
“Fossil Ridge is a 5A program and it was extremely hot, but we’re proud of the way the players battled,” Hutchins said.
The Lions and Lady Lions (1-2) are back in action again at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16 when they welcome Copperas Cove.
