
In a District 7-4A tennis match that lasted over five hours, the Brownwood Lions and Lady Lions chalked up a crucial 10-9 victory over Gatesville Tuesday on the BHS courts.
With the win, Brownwood (4-8, 2-1) remains in the hunt for second place in the final district standings as the Lady Lions and Lions next host Stephenville at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30 in 7-4A action.
Against Gatesville, the Lions won eight of their nine matches, including a sweep in doubles competition.
Boys tandems chalking up victories for Brownwood were No. 1 Trine Baugh and Eric Smith (6-0, 6-1 over Ryan Connally and Rogan Smith), No. 2 Aiden Oplotnik and Ian Cervantes (6-1, 6-2 over Colin Rainer and Quinton Ivy), and No. 3 Cooper Morgan and Eli Hutson (6-4, 6-4 over Elijah Tyson and Donovan Herrera).
Recording singles wins for the Lions were No. 1 Blake Hutchins (6-2, 6-1 over Connally), No. 2 Smith (6-2, 6-2 over Smith), No. 3 Baugh (7-6 [4], 6-0 over Rainer), No. 4 Oplotnik (6-3, 2-6, 11-9 over Matthew Lynn), and No. 6 Cervantes (6-2, 4-6, 10-7 over Tyson).
Hutchins and Ashlyn Bundick, in mixed doubles, remained undefeated on the season (6-1, 6-3 over Lynn and Ruiz).
In girls competition, No. 3 singles players Jami Patterson provided the decisive victory (7-5, 6-1 over Lexi Bryant) for Brownwood.
