
AUSTIN – Athletes from Coleman and Goldthwaite brought home bronze medals, while the Bangs Dragons came up just shy in two events at the Class 2A portion of the UIL Track and Field State Championships Friday at Myers Stadium at the University of Texas.
Coleman’s Victoria Guerrero finished third in the girls 1600 meters in a school-record time of 5:10.22, which trailed only state champion Cara Sims of Elysian Fields (5:08.84) and runner-up Alexis Wade of Farwell (5:10.15).
Meanwhile, Goldthwaite’s Rylie Hillis placed third in the girls 800 meters in a time of 2:20.41. Only state champion Jaylee Belcher of Windthorst (2:19.61) and runner-up Anna Pearcy of Hamilton (2:20.01) posted faster times.
The Bangs Dragons almost reached the medal stand twice as Hunter Withers, Connor Bible, Brennan Mendieta and Jayden Robinson placed fourth in the boys 4×200 relay in a time of 1:28.67. Medalists in the race were Tioga (1:27.3), Frankston (1:28.2) and Shiner (1:28.3).
Also, Cason Tidwell – the “wild card” in the boys 300-meter hurdles – finished fourth overall in a time of 39.83. Securing medals were Kayden Patterson of Burton (38.63), Slayden Young of Stamford (39.4) and Brock Bierschwale of Junction (39.72).
The Coleman girls 4×400 relay of Kylie Strickland, Makenna Edwards, Victoria Guerrero and Savannah Hurtado also added a fourth-place effort in a time of 4:06.03. Medal winners were Panhandle (3:59.81), Gruver (4:04.42) and Falls City (4:05.34).
