OwenTRTFScholarshipBrownwood High School Biology teacher Kristi Owen was recently selected to receive a scholarship from the Texas Retired Teachers Foundation which will help her in the pursuit of her masters degree from Howard Payne University.

In 2009, Kristi began her masters study in Instructional Leadership and aspires to become a school principal.  Her passion for teaching and her students’ love for her are evident in awards she has received such as BISD Teacher of the Years and Region XV Teacher of the Year.  Mrs. Owen is the daughter of Elizabeth Ellis of Bangs, a member of the Brown County RTA.

Now in its third year, the TRTF has awarded $17,500 in scholarships and $13,000 in classroom assistant grants.  In 2010, the Foundation awarded 6 more classroom assistance grants than were awarded in 2009.

TRTF awards scholarships to Texas college students pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Education. Student scholarship applicants must be a relative of a member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) and should include their official high school or college transcripts with their application. Each of the ten scholarship recipients will receive $500 to use towards their college education.

Classroom Assistance Grants are awarded to public school teachers who on a daily basis demonstrate commitment to public education and Texas children through the creation of programs, events, or other learning platforms.

Owen graduated from Brownwood High school in 1990, and then completed her B.S. in Biology at Howard Payne University in 1994.  She is certified to teach both elementary and secondary students.  During the 2011-2012 school year, Owen taught 2 levels of Biology and Environmental Science, worked with the UIL Science team and was the BHS Prom sponsor.

Owen and her husband Scott have two sons; Seth a freshman at Brownwood High School and Kory a 7th grader at Brownwood Middle School.
