Award Winning Season for the BHS Mighty Maroon Band

BHSMarchingBand2010

The Brownwood High School Band had a great year earning many accolades and experiencing some great travel opportunities.  Band Director Richard Graham reported the following of the year’s events and awards:

October 4, 2010:  The Mighty Maroon Marching Band earned a Superior Rating at the San Angelo Marching Festival. They also earned the Best Percussion and Best Brass in Class 3A awards.


October 11, 2010:  The band once again earned the Superior Rating award at the Early Marching Festival along with Best Drum Major, Best Percussion, Best Color Guard, and Best Band in Class 3A.

October 18, 2010:  The band earned the Superior Rating at the Region 7 UIL Marching Contest and advanced to the Area Contest in Waco.  The band placed 13th out of 28 bands at the Area Competition.

December 4, 2010:  13 Mighty Maroon Band members that earned a spot in the All Region Band at Howard Payne University:

  • Paula Mattix – flute
  • Braianna Alvarez – clarinet
  • Robert Lynch – clarinet
  • Krysta Whitehead – 1st chair contrabass clarinet
  • Karissa Means – bassoon
  • Brock Allen – saxophone
  • Megan Irwin – trumpet
  • Chris Burnett – trumpet
  • Salome Stewart – french horn
  • Cruz Alonzo – trombone
  • Jacob Escobar – trombone
  • Jason Murphy – tuba
  • Chris Bryant – tuba

January 2011:  Advancing to the Area auditions were: Brianna Alvarez, Krysta Whitehead, Megan Irwin, Cruz Alonzo and Jason Murphy.  

February 12, 2011:  Megan Irwin, a member of the Brownwood High School Band, was selected as a member of the ATSSB All-State Band.  She was chosen for this honor in competitive auditions held this year across the state at region and area levels, which concluded in Robinson.  Over 9,000 1A, 2A and 3A band students audition for this honor – only 240 are selected.  She performed in concert with the ATSSB Band Saturday, February 12th at the Lila Cockrell Theatre of the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center in downtown San Antonio.  Megan plays the trumpet.

February 26, 2011: Howard Payne University-The Mighty Maroon Band earned 56 medals and advanced 55 students to State at the Region 7 Solo & Ensemble Contest.

Earning a Superior Rating and advancing to state were Karissa Means with a bassoon solo and Cruz Alonzo with a trombone solo.

Flute Choir: Shayla Biessener, Raylene Camp, Elizabeth Chancellor, Megan Hanson, Nani Kamitchis, Codi Lewis, Paula Mattix, Chris Minor, Jordon Robins, Janet Rodriguez, Kristen Stanke, Erika Villarreal

Clarinet Choir: Allison Aguirre, Brianna Alvarez, Robert Lynch, Jackie Mayes, Lindsey McKinney, Karissa Means, Meagan Moore, Lourie Pruett, Sylvia Walters, Krysta Whitehead

Saxophone Quartet: Brock Allen, Jamison Greenhaw, Shalem Ruiz, Zach Ramos

Trumpet Trio: Chris Burnett, Megan Irwin, Kristin Musgrove

Brass Quintet: Jacob Escobar, Megan Irwin, Jason Murphy, Makaila Reyes, Salome Stewart

Brass Quintet: Chris Bryant, Chris Burnett, Laura Cadena,  John Greer,  Suzanna Salazar

Percussion Ensemble: Dylan Bendt, Michaela Blanton, Jaden Cox, Emily Dick, Nathan Ferguson, Mackenzie Gill, Emily Harding, Jose Hernandez,  Alsatia Jowers, Scott Lewis, Natalie Mayo, Abraham Salazar, Adam Tipton, Meredith Underwood

March 24, 2011:  The Mighty Maroon Symphonic Band earned the Superior rating at the Cisco Concert and Sight Reading Contest.

March 26, 2011:  The BHS Jazz Band earned the Superior rating at the Tarleton Jazz Festival.  Winning the Outstanding Musician awards were Chris Burnett, Natalie Mayo, Cruz Alonzo, and Jamison Greenhaw.

April 14, 2011:  The Symphonic Band earned the Superior rating in both Concert and Sight Reading at the UIL Concert Contest completing their quest for the 6th consecutive “Sweepstakes” award.

May 6, 2011:  The Symphonic and Jazz Bands both earned the Superior rating and Best Band in Class Awards at the Gulf Coast Classic Concert Festival held in Brownsville.

Congratulations to the Brownwood High School Band, Mr. and Mrs. Graham, and the BHS Band booster club for a year worth of hard work, early morning practices and late night returns which obviously were worth the effort!
