Brownwood News – “Today’s young generation will be key contributors as our leaders of tomorrow” (Scott Cooper). Twelve Brownwood High School seniors received an academic scholarship to attend Angelo State University, on their journey to pursuing further educational possibilities.

One of these students, James Bautista, (above) received the Carr Distinguished Academic Scholarship to attend ASU in the fall. Only five incoming students are given the award, an annual $15,000 scholarship, renewable for up to $60,000. The Carr Academic Scholarship is a premium scholarship program available exclusively to ASU honors students. To receive this scholarship, the student must score at least a 32 on the ACT or a 1420 on the SAT, maintain a GPA of at least a 3.5, and interview with a scholarship committee.

Bautista found out about the scholarship application opportunity through his sister, an ASU alumnus. Once he applied, he interviewed with the Carr Scholarship committee and then with the Biology department head and the honors program director. In a few days, Bautista was notified about receiving the scholarship. “When I received the full ride, my family and I were ecstatic,” Bautista said. The Carr Distinguished Academic Scholarship, “is a blessing,” he said, as he will be able to focus on his academics throughout his years at ASU. Bautista plans to pursue a major in biology with a double minor in chemistry and accounting.

“I chose Angelo State because it offers the experience of creating close relationships with your peers and professors, while still maintaining the feel and diversity of a large college,” Bautista said. “I know that with the skills and knowledge gained during my time at ASU, I will be well-prepared.” Bautista plans to continue through academia and medical school, working toward the goal of becoming a general physician.

The eleven other BHS students (shown above) who received scholarships are Angel Rivera, Elizabeth Doroteo-Zamora, Loralei Briley, Stacy Holland, Jayden Woodard, Riley Mertle, Cameron Hall, Mary-Elizabeth Skelton, Kyler Judkins, Michele Grammer, and Alexander Minchey.

Carr scholarships are funded by an endowment from Robert G. and Nona K. Carr, who bequeathed their interests in oil, gas, and other minerals from producing properties in West Texas. More details of the scholarship are available at www.angelo.edu/carr_foundation.
