The City of Early unanimously passed an ordinance Monday that bans the use, sale, or possession of K2 or similar substances in their city limits. Early Police Chief David Mercer presented the ordinance which he helped to draft based on ordinances that other cities have recently passed.

Mercer told the Early City Council that this ordinance would ban K2 and any other substances with similar chemical makeup.

“I don’t think it (the ordinance) could be any better,” Mercer said. “It looks very detailed.”

The penalty for breaking the ordinance is a $500 fine, which is the maximum allowed under a class C misdemeanor.

K2 mimics the effects of marijuana although some believe that the effects can be much worse.  Mercer said that two stores in Early sell the substance.

The new ordinance will take effect after about a week once the new ordinance is publicized.

Brownwood is slated to consider passage of a similar ordinance to ban the substance at their next city council meeting on October 26th.
