Brownwood News – Brownwood HOSA (Future Health Professionals) students attended the 2019 State Leadership conference in March of 2019. For the 8th consecutive year, Brownwood will be sending students to the International level of competition. HOSA recently became an International organization as Canada and Japan are now members. Brownwood High School (BHS) attendees were Rumer Foster, Kaytlin Welch, Maecy Delacruz, Laurel Glass, Emily Chapa, Tanner Scull, James Bautista, Mackinley Coppic, Lora Briley, Elizabeth Doroteo-Zamora, Sierra Fleet, and Kayla Stanley.

“Brownwood HOSA started the week off well with two $1000 scholarship recipients; Miss Laurel Glass and Emily Chapa,” stated BHS Health Science Teacher and HOSA Advisor, Annalyn Deen. “Soon to follow we were awarded a Recognition of Merit for a National Service Project submitted by Laurel Glass, Outstanding HOSA Chapter recognition submitted by James Bautista, and HOSA Happenings submitted by Emily Chapa. During the Grand Awards Ceremony, we had Sierra Fleet place 3rd in the State in Medical Spelling and Tanner Scull place in the top 10% of the Health Care Issues Exam. Overall it was an outstanding outing for BHS HOSA.”
Brownwood High School members also mentored students in the new middle school chapter throughout the trip. “The middle school students excelled in one of their first big school outings with many placing in the top five of the State,” said Deen. “Kristi Sharpe brought 24 Brownwood Middle School (BMS) members in their second year advancing to the HOSA State Leadership Conference, and of those competitors over half were recognized.”
The students awarded from BMS included: Christopher Robinson (1st in Health Lifestyle), Megan Terrill (1st in Speaking Skills), Emma Ringer and Jesslyn Sliger (2nd in Health Career Display), Aishwarya Nigalye (2nd in Medical Terminology), Kali Alvizo, Michael Camp, Magaly Cervantes, Aidan Howard, Savannah Rodriguez, and Alexandria Touhakis (2nd in Public Health), Andrew Boren (3rd in Medical Terminology), Taylor Pinckney (4th in Nutrition), and Hayden Deen (5th in Extemporaneous Health Poster).
“Competing and winning in HOSA is always something to be proud of,” noted Deen. “However, the students are often unaware of the soft skills they obtain when they attend these state-wide events. HOSA expects students to dress professionally, show up on time, and communicate clearly. This organization expects the best of students and we have seen the best out of our students here at BHS and BMS.”
