Brown County Historical Commission received approval at Monday’s Brown County Commissioners Court to place a Brown County Pioneers display at the courthouse recognizing families that first settled and developed the area.

Steve Blake of the Historical Commission explained to the court that families who have ancestors that were in Brown County before the 1900 can apply to have their family represented on the display.  An application is available from the Brown County Historical Commission or at the County Judge’s office.  A fee or donation of $100 along with the application will allow the pioneer’s name and the date they came to Brown County to be placed on the display.

The display is 5’wide x 8’tall x 2’ deep and features decorative metal work around a square display of nameplates.  A suggested position for the display is the hallway near the county clerk’s office on the first floor of the courthouse.

Other matters on the agenda:

*Commissioners approved recommendation for a new member of the Brown County Child Welfare Board, Bonita Pipes, for a three year term beginning October 1, 2010.  Current members that will continue serving on the board are Judy Spivey, Terry Blagg, and Kitty Cavanaugh.  Three other members are unable to continue service and replacements will need to be found.  Recommendations for these board positions can be submitted to Kitty Cavanaugh for consideration by the Child Welfare Board.

*Request and permission to advertise for bids of both paving & paving related materials and for crushed rock & freight was approved.

*Approval was granted by the court for the Elections Office to hire part time workers.  These new employees are Shirley Kize, Victoria Williams and Larry Franks.  Two additional seasonal workers that will help during the elections are Elizabeth Davidson and Ashley Pittman.

*Approval was granted for speed control devices to be installed on David and Pency Streets at Lake Brownwood.   Speed limit signs stating 15mph and speed bumps will be added to the area due to the problems of vehicles that travel these narrow roads at a high rate of speed.

* A resolution was approved declaring the week of September 17-23 Constitution Week celebrating the signing of the U. S. Constitution on September 17, 1787.
