Brownwood News – On Saturday, August 26th, the Pecan Valley Kiwanis Club and the Brownwood Kiwanis Club joined together to build a handicap ramp for a deserving Brown County resident.

“This was a joint effort by our clubs to continue giving back to our community,” Don Holland with the Pecan Valley Kiwanis Club said. This project was a first for both local Kiwanis Clubs to work together.

According to Holland, the Texas Ramp Project accepts applications for ramps from people in need. After applicants complete the screening, the Texas Ramp Project sends the names and addresses to the Pecan Valley Kiwanis Club for all those qualifying in Brown County. The club then contacts the persons, visits the residence to design the ramp. The club gathers the necessary materials, prebuilds the components, and revisits the site to assemble. On Saturday 12 people volunteered for four hours to help construct the handicap ramp.

“Our feeling is that folks from all over Brown County participate in our fund raisers, so why not include them in our projects?” Holland said. “We continue to strive to be good stewards of the money that is contributed to us through our various fund raisers.”

Holland explained most of the materials used to build the handicap ramp were donated from The Home Depot, which has a partnership with the Texas Ramp Project. In the past five years, the Pecan Valley Kiwanis Club has built at least 20 handicap ramps for Brown County applicants.
