BRMC Specialist Tom Byrd, MD Named Physician of the Quarter

Brownwood News – Tom D. Byrd, MD, Internal Medicine Specialist and Hospitalist at Brownwood Regional Medical Center (BRMC) was recently chosen as the Physician of the Fourth Quarter 2017 by the staff of BRMC. He was nominated and voted on by the staff for his dedication and quality care provided to his patients and for showing support to all staff members.

Dr. Byrd’s medical career began here in Brownwood and Bryan, TX where he practiced as a Physician Assistant for 5 years before entering Medical School. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Texas and completed the physician assistant program at University of Texas Southwestern in 1983. He graduated with his medical degree at University of Texas Medical School San Antonio in 1992 and completed his residency at Baylor University Medical Center in 1995. He is Board Certified by American Board of Internal Medicine/Hospital Medicine. He has been a member of the Brownwood Regional Medical Center Active Medical Staff since 1995.

He returned to Brownwood and opened Heart of Texas Internal Medicine in July of 1995 partnering with Stephen Oines, MD and David Morales, MD. Together they built the practice from ground up and added additional physicians, Amy Tindol, MD and Lisa Fowler MD at 109 South Park Drive.  Dr. Byrd left the practice and became a full time hospitalist at BRMC on April 1st 2011. When asked why he chose Internal Medicine, Byrd said, ”I enjoy the direct longitudinal interaction with patients and this interaction creates a unique relationship.” 

He and his wife Sue have been married for 35 years and have 3 children whom also have an interest in health care. Dr. Roy Byrd, Shelby Byrd, RN; and Sara Byrd, MHA.  In his spare time, he enjoys running, distance bicycling, and reading.  He has a passion for working with “The Cries of a Child Clinic,” in Burundi, Africa and has traveled in this African area bicycling as a fundraising event for the clinic, in addition to seeing patients at the Cornerstone Clinic.

Dr. Byrd has held leadership positions for the BRMC Medical Staff including Chief of Staff 1998 and the Credentials Committee Chairman in 2000 and 2013.
