A group of local musicians has begun a project to bring a new music venue to Brownwood. At 3rd and Hawkins, the owners of Satellite Landing are planning to offer something a little different than other venues in town.

Paul Lawson and John Smith are interested in bringing a different kind of music scene to the Brownwood area, and doing so in a smoke free and friendly environment.

At a pre-launch party this past weekend, the venue saw close to 100 people in attendance for a performance by local band The Remedy, featuring Smith and Lawson. The duo wanted a place to play the music they enjoy, so they decided to open their own venue.

Lawson says the crowd in attendance this weekend was largely “people that I have never seen when I was in any other venue in town.”

Smith says “We’re hopefully gonna bring in bands and people that Brownwood people would normally travel to Austin, Abilene or Dallas to go see. We’ll bring that here so they can experience it locally.”

The venue will also be available to rent for parties or receptions, in between bookings for bands.

When asked why they wanted to open a venue like this in town, Smith said “There’s 20,000 people in Brownwood, and the majority of them have nothing to do on the weekends, because they don’t like what’s available to them.”

The plans are for the venue to be smoke-free and BYOB, with food by local vendors available in a planned outdoor dining area. Smith and Lawson also hope to have theme nights, like a Blues & BBQ night with pit BBQ available for patrons for example.

Smith said “People are hungry for something different. They’re used to what’s here and they’re wanting something else. Not that (this will be) better, just different.”
