Brownwood News – The annual Brownwood Juneteenth celebration takes place this weekend with games, music in the park, dancing, a train ride for children, water slide, ferris wheel rides, and even an obstacle course. The event kicks off Friday, June 16th at 5 p.m. with music in the newly renovated Cecil Holman Park provided by DJ Double R Entertainment. Free hotdogs will be available for children, and adults can purchase a hotdog for $1.
The two-day Juneteenth celebration will take place at the Cecil Holman Park at 1100 Hall Street and the Bennie Houston Community Center at 505 Cordell.

The celebration will continue Saturday, June 17th, at 10 a.m. with Basketball Skills Training. Celebrators of all ages are welcome to learn line dances at 2 p.m. A 50 foot obstacle course will open at 3 p.m. Children are invited to enjoy train rides from 4 to 8 p.m. Music in the park will continue on Saturday starting at 5 p.m.
Food available to purchase at the event will include: Jack-a-Don’s Pizza & Chicken, Smoked Turkey Legs, Funnel Cakes, Shaved Ice, Smoked Pork Chops, and more.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.
Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a weekend marked with celebrations, events, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future.
