BISD Press Release – Six Brownwood High School (BHS) Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) qualified and competed at the state conference in Corpus Christi, Texas, March 30-April 1.  Elizabeth Aleman-Martinez placed second in her event and qualified to compete at the HOSA International Competition in Orlando, Florida June 21-24.

The students that attended the state competition included HOSA Area Officer, Emily Chapa (attended officer training), Elizabeth Doreto Zamora (qualified in Behavioral Health knowledge test), Laurel Glass (qualified in Medical Reading knowledge test), Yuliana Garcia (qualified in Home Health Aide skills competition), Hannah Angeles (qualified in Veterinary Science skills competition), and Elizabeth Aleman-Martinez (qualified in Personal Care skills competition).

Elizabeth Aleman-Martinez will be attending the HOSA International Competition in Orlando after earning second place in Personal Care skills competition. This was the second year she made it to state in her event. Last year she placed 6th. “There were over 3100 competitors at the state leadership conference,” said BHS Health Science Teacher and HOSA Advisor, Annalyn Deen. “At Internationals, there will be over 6,800 competitors in 57 different events.”

At the international competition, Elizabeth will also participate in HOSA University. This teaches members leadership skills such as effective communication, goal setting, time management, teamwork, and self-awareness.  “In addition, the event will include educational symposiums,” explained Deen. “Past workshops have covered topics such as large vet dentistry, health careers in the army, mobile health technology, college readiness, baby catching and many more.”

While attending the State Conference, Deen was elected to be one of 16 that will be on the State Board of Directors for TEXAS HOSA. “I will serve on this board for three years,” noted Deen. “I will help plan all HOSA conferences and find ways to make Texas HOSA even better than it already is.”
