CLYDE – The District 7-A champion and seventh-ranked May Tigers are headed for the second round of the UIL Class A baseball state playoffs as they swept their bi-district series against the Jayton Jaybirds, 17-2 and 18-2, here Wednesday.

In the 17-2 victory, the Tigers yielded two runs in the top of the first inning, but answered with eight in the bottom half, tacked on five more in the third inning, and scored their final four runs in the fourth.

Aided by eight walks and four Jayton errors, May also collected 11 hits – two by Kobey Morris, who added three RBIs; two hits and one RBI apiece from Brody Stice and Kayden Psencik; one hit and two RBIs each from Lane Goodson, Kaden Watkins, and Hunter Seider; a hit and an RBI from Maddix Raffel; one hit from Cayson Dail; and one RBI from Jackson Lusk

On the mound, Goodson worked all five innings and surrendered two runs on four hits with 11 strikeouts and six walks. The Tiger defense did not commit and error.

In the 18-2 triumph, May jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, which Jayton cut in half in the bottom of the frame. After two, the Tigers increased the lead to 7-1, which stood at 8-2 after three innings, and May pushed the advantage to 14-2 in the fourth. The Tigers tacked on four additional runs in the top of the fifth.

Again assisted by three Jayton errors and five walks, the Tigers chalked up 16 hits as well – three from Goodson, who plated two; a pair from Stice, who drove in three; two each from Psencik and Watkins, who both added a pair of RBIs; two hits and one RBI apiece from Dail and Raffel; two hits from Morris; and one hit and one RBI from Lusk.

On the mound, Morris went the distance, surrendering one run on two hits with eight strikeouts and five walks over five innings. The Tigers committed four errors in the field.

The Tigers (14-1), who have won 13 games in a row, will next face either No. 9 Ira or Roby in second round action next week.
