Richard George Smith Sr “Rich”, 84, of Hunterdon County New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Sunday April 26th 2026 with close family by his side, in Brownwood Texas.

He was born on December 24th 1941 in Stockton New Jersey to George Lloyd Smith and Elva Mae Hewitt. From a young age Rich was passionate about automobiles and engines. He spent most of his adult life working with them in some capacity. He found great satisfaction in restoring small antique steam engines and attending related events. He was known for his kindness and gentle humor. He loved to tell stories and would often have those around him laughing. In his later years he reconnected deeply with his faith and found a daily sense of peace through prayer and his Church family in Pennsylvania at the Millersburg Assembly of God.

Rich is survived by his sons Richard Smith Jr, William Denton and Johnathan Denton; daughters, Katrina Smith, Andrea Smith and Lisa Denton. Additionally, 5 living grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gary D. Smith; wife, Donna Bracken-Smith; his two daughters, Erica Turner and Denise Smith; his long-time partner Kathy Denton; and long-time companion Veronica Dean. Also, his beloved cat, Mr. Grinch.

Rich found joy in bluegrass and country music, spending time with his Church friends and his family. The highlight of his recent days was conversing with his sister-in-Christ Betty and friends from Church. He loved to “tinker” on engines and would have the biggest smile at successfully starting up an old engine. Richard also had a gentle love for animals; in his later years he befriended any stray that made its way to his porch.

A memorial gathering will be planned for a later date in Hunterdon County NJ. Current arrangements are entrusted to Heartland Funeral and Cremation in Brownwood Texas.

Rich’s absence leaves a quiet ache in our hearts, but his spirit lives on through faith and love.

In lieu of flowers, the family is working to raise funds to be able to bring Rich’s remains back to New Jersey to be laid to rest in Rosemont Cemetery with his mother. Please consider visiting the campaign below.
