STEPHENVILLE – In a rematch of their season-opening 5-2 victory, the District 5-4A champion Brownwood Lions and the District 6 fourth-place team Godley Wildcats were teetering toward a scoreless regulation and an extra session.
But with just over three minutes left, Aiden Jimenez broke a 0-0 tie with the game’s only goal, thanks to an assist from Raven Prado, as the Lions earned a 1-0 victory and a Class 4A Division II Region I soccer championship.
Hudson Fry again posted a shutout in goal for the Lions (13-1-2) extended their unbeaten streak to 14 matches, as Brownwood has only tasted defeat once and that occurred in the second game of the season at Marlin on Jan. 6. Godley ended its year with a 12-7 record.
The Lions – who advanced three rounds deep in the playoffs in 2025 – will face Lake Worth, which defeated Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis, 4-3, Friday night, in the area round of the playoffs next week. Brownwood knocked off Lake Worth, 2-0, in a playoff warm-up game at Gordon Wood Stadium back on March 12.
