
KILLEEN – The Brownwood Lions baseball team picked up its second win of the season Thursday at the Killeen tournament, snapping a four-game losing streak – all shutouts – with a 12-5 triumph over host Killeen.
Brownwood ended a string of 21 scoreless innings with three runs in the top of the first against Killeen (2-5), followed by three more in the second, two in the third, three in the fourth, and a final run in the sixth inning.
The Lions compiled 11 hits – two each by Shaxton Simpson, Garrett Wilkerson and Cannon Calvert, and one apiece by Robbie Robinson, Kasyn Wooten, Durham Brown, Calder Damron, and Aden Smith. Robinson, Wilkerson and Calvert collected two RBIs each, while Brown, Wooten and Wyatt Wolf each added one.
The Lions were also aided by seven Killeen errors.
On the mound, Harrison Sweaney logged the victory, allowing three runs on three hits with eight strikeouts and five walks in four innings. Blayne Stegemoller tossed two innings of relief, yielding one two runs on two walks with three strikeouts. Defensively, Brownwood committed a pair of errors.
In the three-run first inning, Wolf walked, Simpson singled and Robinson reached on an error to score the first run. Wilkerson then followed with a two-RBI single to center field for a 3-0 advantage.
Brownwood stretched the lead to 6-0 in the second as Damron tripled with one out and scored when Wolf reached on error. Simpson got aboard after another Killeen miscue that allowed Wolf to come home. Robinson then singled home Simpson to cap the scoring in the frame.
The Lions increased the advantage to 8-0 in the third as Brown’s sacrifice fly plated Wooten, who was hit by a pitch to start the frame, and Damron reached on an error that allowed Evan Escobar, who also reached on a miscue, to cross the plate.
Killeen shaved the deficit to 8-2 in the bottom the third but Brownwood added three more runs in the top of the fourth. Wooten’s RBI bunt single brought home Simpson, who was hit by a pitch, and Calvert’s two-RBI single scored Wooten and Aviud Gomez, who was plunked by a pitch.
Brownwood scored once more in the sixth inning on an RBI sac fly from Wolf, which brought home Calvert, who had doubled to right field.
The Lions began tournament play with a 10-0 loss to Pflugerville as Brownwood fell victim to a no-hitter and the defense committed four errors.
Pflugerville (4-3) scored two runs in the first inning, five in the second, one in the third and the final two runs in the fifth.
The Lions (2-4) will take on Pflugerville Hendrickson at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Shoemaker High School, then conclude tournament play Saturday against Elgin at 10 a.m. and Leander Glenn at noon at Harker Heights.
