
The Brownwood Lady Lions continued their winning ways on their first day of play at the Battle on the Bayou softball tournament Friday, collecting two more victories to extend their win streak to seven games.
Lady Lions 13, Lubbock Estacado 0
In their second outing of the day, the Lady Lions belted three home runs in a dominant victory over Estacado.
Kaydence Allen launched two of the homers – a three-run shot in the top of the first inning, and a grand slam to end the contest at the time limit in the top of the fourth – en route to a seven-RBI outing.
Adyn Lucas also contributed a two-run bomb to left field to start the scoring during a seven-run fourth inning.
The Lady Lions jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first as Hanah Campos singled, but was erased on a fielder’s choice by Lucas, who later came home on an RBI ground out by Lila Mares. An Audrey Keas RBI single plated Kiara Delce, running for Allen with the second run, then Maitlyn Esquivel walked ahead of the first home run of the contest.
Brownwood stretched the lead to 6-0 in the second inning as Lucas, who doubled with one out, came home when Brenda Allen reached on one of five Estacado errors.
The seven-run fourth for the Lady Lions featured a single up the middle by Campos ahead of Lucas’ blast, then Mares reached on an error, Brenda Allen singled and Keas followed with an RBI base hit. Esquivel reached on a floater over shortstop to fill the sacks ahead of Kaydence Allen’s final round-tripper.
Brownwood notched 13 hits with Campos providing three and two apiece coming from Lucas, Keas, Esquivel, Brenda Allen and Kaydence Allen.
In the circle, Brenda Allen worked three shutout innings and yielded one hit with four strikeouts and one walk, as the defense committed a pair of errors behind her.
The Lady Lions did lose catcher Nevaeh Perez to a knee injury during the contest, as Keas moved from the outfield to behind the plate, and Eboni Baker stepped into the outfield.
Lady Lions 4, Cisco 3
In Friday’s first game, the Lady Lions held off Cisco in a see-saw performance.
Brownwood started the game with three runs in the top of the first inning as Campos drew a walk and Lucas followed by reaching on an error, which allowed Campos to trot home. Brenda Allen then doubled home Lucas and Kaydence Allen singled home Brenda Allen.
Cisco closed the gap to 3-2 with single runs in the bottom of the first and second innings. Carra Arnold tripled with one out in the first and scored on a wild pitch, and Bailey Martinez led off with a walk in the second and came home on a RBI sacrifice fly by Maddie Deihl.
Clinging to their 3-2 lead in the third, and facing a bases-loaded one-out situation, Cisco’s Aubrey Corpus lined out to Keas in right field, who fired to Brenda Allen at first base to complete the double play and end the threat.
The Lady Lions tacked on a needed insurance run in the top of the fourth as Esquivel reached on a one-out double, then stole third base and came home thanks to an errant throw to the bag.
Cisco tacked on a its third run in the bottom of the fourth as Martinez led off with a single and eventually scored on a wild pitch. With the tying run at second base and one out, Kaydence Allen fanned Tanner Robinson and got Izabella Frankfort to ground out to Campos at shortstop to end the contest.
Brownwood notched six hits in the game – two by Brenda Allen and one piece from Kaydence Allen, Campos, Mares, and Esquivel.
In the circle, Kaydence Allen allowed three runs on three hits with four strikeouts, four walks and a hit batter, while the Lady Lion defense did not commit an error.
The Lady Lions (7-1) will face Hico at 3 p.m. Friday, then wrap up tournament play Saturday against Burnet at 10:30 a.m. and Hawley at 1:30 p.m.
