The Brownwood Lions’ hunt for their first District 6-4A basketball victory continues as the No. 16 Brock Eagles rebounded from their first league loss with a 96-47 victory at Warren Gym Thursday night.
The Lions (10-14, 0-3), who have dropped six games in a row overall, trailed Brock (17-9, 2-1) by a 22-9 count after one quarter, 54-26 at halftime, and 75-34 heading to the fourth period.
“Brock’s a Top 25 team in the state and you can see that in the way they move the ball, the way they shoot the ball, you can tell they’re a really well-coached team, they’re disciplined and they play a lot of basketball,” said Lions first-year head coach Jorden Young. “Kudos to them.”
Scoring for Brownwood were Cannon Calvert with eight points trailed by seven from Bennett Windham, six from Carson Noe, five from Aaron Clevenger, four each from Durham Brown and Jordan Gilbert, three piece from Grant Gray, Santiago Alvizo and Judson Coalson, and two points each from Riggs Gray and Elias Perez.
Five Brock players finished in double figures in scoring, Brady Williams and Colt Matlock with 20 apiece, Jacoby Boxell with 17, Wade Doherty with 11, and Danny Jones with 10 points.
“Brock has a lot of basketball talent in general, but I thought our kids came out and competed,” Young said. “I know the score was lopsided, there was a moment in the second or third quarter where I told them I didn’t feel like the energy was very good, but after that I challenged them not to quit, not to give up and they responded and continued to compete all the way to the end.”
The Lions continue their quest for their first District 6-4A victory at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at Mineral Wells (12-14, 0-3), which lost to Graham (17-10, 2-1) by a 56-32 count Thursday night.
“Mineral Wells is real scrappy, they do a good job of playing with a lot of effort and intensity, they’re a very comparable team to us,” Young said. “There are nights they have it and nights they don’t, so we have to show up and be ready regardless of who we’re playing. We have to give our best effort all the time. I feel it’s a game that’s going to be competitive and one we have a chance to win on the road, but it’s going to have to take buy-in and discipline.”
