The Brownwood Fire Department issued the following press release Tuesday afternoon: At 2:36 am on January 13, 2026, the Brownwood Fire Department responded to a confirmed structure fire located at 2810 Good Shepherd in Brownwood Texas. Upon arrival, Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and heat coming from the residence with flames visible from the rear corner of the home. One adult resident and two dogs were inside the residence at the time of the fire. The resident attempted to self-extinguish the fire prior to the fire department’s arrival but was unsuccessful.
Fire crews made initial entry through the front door utilizing pre connected hose lines. The main body of the fire was knocked down quickly; however, fire extension was found in the attic space. After the initial knock down the firefighters conducted extensive overhaul operations to ensure all hot spots were extinguished.
One dog was rescued from the structure during firefighting operations.
Upon investigation it was found that the fire was accidental and originated in the bedroom and the cause was determined to be a space heater. Neither the residents nor dogs were injured and no injuries to any fire personnel were reported. Damage is estimated at $200,000. The Red Cross was on the scene to provide short-term housing for the residents.
Responding Units were Brownwood Chief 9, Chief 92, Truck 9, Rescue 9, Engine 92, Early Engine 88, Brownwood PD Unit 622,640,643, Lifeguard Ambulance, Red Cross and Oncor.
The Brownwood Fire Department reminds residents to use caution when operating space heaters, ensuring they are kept at least three feet from the combustible materials and are turned off when unattended.
